NY = is called The Big Apple
– one of the world’s biggest cities, it has 8 million inhabitants
– there are five boroughs (části města): Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Richmond (Staten Island)
– is situated at the mouth of the Hudson River
– it is a centre of business, music and art
history
– the first people were American Indians and lived in Manhattan, they killed the animals and sold the fur (kůže)
– 1609 – a ship came to the harbour – Dutch people, Captain Henry Hudson and he bought some furs => trading fur with Indians
– 1625 – the Dutch people bought Manhattan from Indians for 24 $ and built new houses and called their little town New Amsterdam
– Dutch gave the little town to England and New Amsterdam became New York a colony of England – it was important trading part
– 4th July 1776 – NY has been independent – no taxes
– (1890) there were many immigrants (Germans, Irish)
– today NY is a mixture of people and customs
Statue of liberty
– symbol of political freedom – 1886
– 7 rays on her crowns represent 7 continents
– she carries the torch (pochodeň) in her right hand and in her left hand a law book with the roman written date 4. 7. 1776
– was a present from the people of France to people of USA
Wall Street
– a business centre
– WTC stood there ; close to the Wall Street stands Empire State Building (the highest in NY and the 7th in the world – 381 m)
– close to this is 5th Avenue (many stores, movie, theatre, restaurants)
Lincoln Center
– is the largest culture complex in the world (visitors, exhibitions, theatre, film, dancers, concerts and beautiful Metropolitan Opera House)
Rockefeller center
– is the world’s largest privately owned business and entertainment center (28 skyscrapers, restaurants, stores,…, X-mas tree, and skating ring every year)
Chinatown
– located to the north of the Wall Street
– chinese restaurants, vegetable markets, little shops
– the biggest ethnic place in NY
